Dear FEMA Staff:

I am writing in support of the proposed Strawberry Canyon Vegetation Management Project, East Bay Hills, California (January 2008).  I have followed with interest and appreciation the good work done by the University of California over the past five or six years to make their open space areas in the hill more fire safe and more supportive of native vegetation and habitat.

I am in favor of removal of exotic vegetation, in particular, large flammable trees such as eucalyptus and pine.  This is our best defense against the spread of wildfire, especially from firebrands and embers during high wind conditions.

Sincerely,

Your Name

You can find FEMA's Notice of Intent under the NEWS section of UC’s Office of Emergency Preparedness website: http://oep.berkeley.edu/index.html.  You do not have to be an expert ... just state your opinion (hopefully support) in a few sentences regarding the good work of UC to make our hills more fire safe and environmentally sound.  A sample letter is shown below.
